Built in 1514, the Portuguese cistern in the old town served as a warehouse or armory and was later converted to provide a reliable source of water for the inhabitants of the fortress. Visitors can now explore underground, this spectacular vaulted space supported by 25 pillars. For photos, a tripod would be needed to compensate for the low lighting. The cistern is open and accessible every day.
